Emily Barratt's dead... When a group of friends accidentally kill a fellow student they decide not to own up, determined that it won't ruin their lives or their friendship. After all, they weren't at fault - the girl ran out in front of their car. And what good would a confession do? Some things are not so easily forgotten, though. Ten years later they're all haunted in their own way, and strangers to each other. But they're about to become reacquainted. Two of them die within the course of a few weeks. Unanswered questions surround both deaths, raising the disturbing possibility that someone wants to make their common past disappear. Haunting and disturbing, "Among the Dead" has developed a cult following since its first publication, and has often attracted the attention of other writers and artists. Kevin Wignall is the author of five adult novels and, as KJ Wignall, the Mercian Trilogy for young adults.

Among the Dead eBook Kevin Wignall

Kevin Wignall is a wonderful story teller. I greatly enjoyed his spy/adventure novels; this one is different but the motif of death is not only present, but is the theme of the book. The pace is somehow slower than in author's other books, however the story is very readable.
Five college buddies return from a party and hit a pedestrian girl who dies on site. They drive away and decide not to report the accident, although the driver offers to go to police by himself without implicating the others.
The story continues 10 years later with one of the five as the main character. He is now a psychology professor at his original college, specializing in sleep disorders, while investigating his own nightmares. The group from college separated after graduation, soon after the accident and he barely kept in touch with two of them.
One day he finds out that one of his old buddies died of drug overdose, buy the death is suspect...
I won't tell the rest of the story, just add that the end clarifies "why" the book main character behaves the way he does.

Among the Dead eBook Kevin Wignall Reviews

This author never offers an ending that is not negative. His endings are rushed and so unsatisfying. I am so sick if his rushed endings, I have downloaded 2 of his books. There will be no more. Try Faith Martin novels. So much more satisfying.
I stuck it out to the end, which was just as bad as the rest of the book. Disliked it.
I have really enjoyed all his other books, however, this one was quite different in every aspect. I thought that it was a analytical journey into the inner mind but there was no real plot or storyline that was fast paced or Progressive. He spent too much time going to a different scenarios that led to nowhere. I was very disappointed with the ending
I loved Wignall's Death in Sweden - so thought i would pick this one up... i was on a long road trip and it was ok - i listened from start to finish - I didn't connect with the characters - i thought i would since I had been affected by an unsolved hit and run while i was in college. The ending was very abrupt and you didn't see the characters really pull away from each other - they were close and they graduated and then10 years pass - there was little tie back to the events. I also like tidy story lines and you can draw an assumption but the closure isn't there..
I only kept reading this book because I kept telling myself "ok, something is about to happen...." only it never did. Kept reading until it started to get slightly interesting for a few pages and then BAM the book ended. I went through it several times to see if I was missing some pages. I actually thought I was in the middle of the book when it ended. No resolution, no who, what, where or how. Waste of time.
Although, before the end of the book I was anticipating the expected conclusion of an interesting read, I agreed with previous reviews about the abrupt and completely unsatisfying ending. In fact, the only way I'll ever read another book by this author is if he writes a better ending and offers it for free to all who purchased the original. Otherwise, sadly it's just another 8hrs I'll never get back...
There's is an intelligent human style to KW writing. I've read four of his novels and each one ended with me wanting to read a sequel with the main character. The main character is flawed but relatable. I've read hundreds of thrillers by well known authors and I would put Kevin Wignall up there with Lee Child, Michael Connelly, David Baldacci and Adam Hall. I wish he would take one best seller and create a series.
